Regulations
- Saxophone competition Brilliant
Note 2001 will be held from July 31 till August 3, 2001
in Staicele, House of Culture, the gala concert will take place on the
4th of August on the open-air stage in Staicele. The
competition is organised by Staicele Town Council – chairman Janis
Bakmanis and event organiser Arija Bakmane. Competition project
coordinators – Billy Harper (USA), Remigius Vilys (Lithuania), Nic
Gotham (Canada), composer Alvils Altmanis and saxophone class lecturer
at the Latvian Academy of Music Artis Simanis (Latvia).
- The II International saxophone
competition Brilliant Note 2001
will be held in 3 rounds, participants competing in 2 groups:
group I – academic
music
group II – jazz music
Academic music group is
divided into 2 age groups:
I “A” – academic
music, age of participants – up to 20 years
I “B” – academic music, age of participants – 21 to 30 years
II “A” – jazz music, age of participants – from the age of 18
till … (no age limit)

Note cannot participate again in the same group.
- The board of the competition has chosen
the judges of the competition Brilliant
Note. The jury will consist of 10 internationally
recognised academic and jazz saxophone music players and experts:

- Artis Sîmanis (Latvia)
- Alvils Altmanis (Latvia)
- Nic Gotham (Canada)

- Lembit Saarsalu (Estonia)
The board of the
competition has exempted judges from voting for their own students –
participants of the competition. Judges can interrupt any presentation
if the time limit has been exceeded.
- The first round of the competition will
be held in Staicele on April 2 – 3, 2001 and the evaluation will be
done by correspondence. In order to participate in the first round,
the applicants should send in the application form and a tape or CD
with a record of their freely chosen programme.
The recorded tapes or CD’s should be sent in by March 28, 2001
(stamp date).

- Candidates for the 2nd round
in both groups will receive an invitation to participate in the
following rounds together with the sheet music of compulsory
compositions. The organisers of the competition will send it out from
Staicele on April 9, 2001 (stamp date).
- Participation fee for the 2nd
round of the competition Brilliant Note
2001 is $ 50 (fifty dollars). The fee must be paid by
June 30, 2001 (stamp date).

- The 2nd round participants of
group I “A” and group I “B” and their accompanists will be
provided with room and board during the competition days. Participants
who come to the competition without their accompanists will be offered
one. Participants who are willing to use a local accompanist (the
charge must be discussed individually with the accompanist) should
send the sheet music of their chosen programme in due time.

The 2nd round
participants of group II “A” will be provided with room and board as
well as a rhythm section (piano, bass and drums) during the competition
days. All participants of group II “A” participate in the
competition with one rhythm section which is provided by the organisers
of the competition.
- Participants in both categories have to
participate in saxophone choir rehearsals, dress rehearsal and the
Gala concert on the open-air stage in Staicele, August 4, 2001, held
by the organisers of the competition.
