Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music deeply regrets to inform that
professor Teofils Bikis (1952-2000) died on November 2nd.
We are grateful to all those who supported our professor morally and financially during his severe illness.

   
 

Teofils Bikis was born in 1952 in Liepaja, Latvia. He began piano studies at the age of four with his mother, a concert pianist. Mr. Bikis began his formal musical education at the Emils Darzins Special Secondary Music School (Riga) in 1959. In 1970, he entered the Moscow Conservatory, graduating from the class of Lev Vlasenko in 1975. Mr. Bikis participated in several international piano competitions, including the Curlionis International Piano Competition (Vilnius) in 1968, at which he was awarded third prize, and the Concours International de Piano Viana da Motta (Lisbon) in 1975, at witch he was awarded first prize. Between 1975 and 1989, Mr. Bikis taught at Novosibirsk Conservatory, serving as chairman of the piano department from 1980-89. Since 1989, he taught at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music. In 1993, Mr. Bikis was chairman of the piano department. Mr. Bikis was also president of the Latvian branch of E. P. T. A. (European Piano Teachers Association). In addition to his professorial responsibilities, Mr. Bikis had been an adjudicator for several international piano competitions, as well as performed concerts and conducted master classes in Russia, Ukraine, The Czech Republic, Germany, Italy Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, France, Finland, Sweden, and Canada.
