Regulations
for The Big Sax
competition
named after the famous Latvian saxophone player
Raimonds Raubisko
- Staicele Town Council (chairman
Janis Bakmanis, event organiser Ârija Bakmane) has decided to
introduce a new tradition besides the traditional saxophone
competition “Brilliant Note”. Every second year a saxophone
competition “The Big Sax” will be organised in the memory of the
famous Latvian saxophone player Raimonds Raubisko. First place
winners in any international or national saxophone competition can
participate in academic music category and laureates of any
international or national competition or festival can participate in
jazz music category. This year the competition “The Big Sax”
will be held from July 31 till August 3 in Staicele, House of
Culture, the gala concert will take place on the open-air stage in
Staicele, August 4.
- R. Raubisko competition “The Big
Sax” will be held in 2 rounds, participants competing in 2 groups:
group I – academic
music
group II – jazz music
There are no
restrictions concerning the age or the number of participants in both
groups.
- The board of the competition has
chosen the judges of the competition “The Big Sax”. The jury
will consist of 9 internationally recognised academic and jazz
saxophone music players and experts:
- Margarita Chapochnikova (Russia)
- Artis Sîmanis (Latvia)
- Alvils Altmanis (Latvia)
- Nic Gotham (Canada)
- Billy Harper (USA)
- Christophe Bois (France)
- Richard Corpolongo (USA)
- Remigius Vilys (Lithuania)
- Petras Vinauskas (Lithuania)
- Lembit Saarsalu (Estonia)
Judges can interrupt
any presentation if the time limit has been exceeded.
- Those who desire to participate in
academic music category in R. Raubisko “The Big Sax”
competition, are required to send in the application form, CV
(curriculum vitae) and a copy of a document stating that they are
the 1st place winners of any international or national
saxophone competition. Deadline – March 28, 2001 (stamp date).

Participants in
academic saxophone music group will compete for the big prize – alto
saxophone SX-90 from the German company Julius Keilwerth.
- Those who desire to participate in
jazz music category in R. Raubisko “The Big Sax” competition are
required to send in the application form, CV (curriculum vitae) and
a copy of a document stating that they are laureates of any
international or national competition or festival. Deadline –
March 28, 2001 (stamp date).

Participants in jazz
saxophone music group will compete for the big prize –tenor
saxophone SX-90 from the German company Julius Keilwerth.
- Participation fee for R. Raubisko
competition “The Big Sax” is $ 200 (two hundred dollars). The
fee must be paid by June 30, 2001 (stamp date).

Participants will be
provided with room and board during the competition days. Participants
who need an accompanist should send in the sheet music of their chosen
programme in due time.

The organisers of the
competition will send out sheet music of compulsory compositions for
both groups on April 9, 2001 from Staicele (stamp date).
The organisers of the
competition will provide participants in jazz music category with a
rhythm section (piano, bass and drums).
- Participants in both categories have
to participate in saxophone choir rehearsals, dress rehearsal and
the gala concert on the open-air stage in Staicele, August 4, 2001,
held by the organisers of R. Raubisko “The Big Sax” competition.
