The Rare Fruits Council

The Rare Fruits Council

The Rare Fruits Council was born from its members' common interest in exploring the baroque chamber genre par excellence: the trio sonata for two violins. With a core formation of four musicians, expanded to suit the repertoire, their evident intensity and never neutral way of making music have allowed the ensemble to win many "followers" among its listeners, and to obtain, over the years, the most superlative praise from international critics: "luminous, brilliant, passionate...","excess and its performers' crazy talent, transported by a real frenzy...", "enormous virtuosity", "overwhelming passion", "infinite expressiveness" have been among the expressions used to describe their recordings and concerts. Regular performers with ensembles and musicians of the stature of Musica Antiqua Köln, Las Arts Florissants, Concerto Köln, Rene Jacobs, Jordi Savall and many others, they also work outside the group as soloists, conductors and teachers, enjoying a solid prestige in the varied facets of the current European baroque scene. In this way, with a variable line-up, they have performed all over Europe, Asia and North and South America, and have recorded for, among others, the record labels Deutsche Grammophon Gesselschaft, Harmonia Mundi, Alpha, Opus 111 and Naive/Auvidis-Astree.

The Rare Fruits Council's debut disc, HIF Biber's Harmonia Artificiosa Ariosa, won the Diapason d'Or and the Grand Prix of the Academie du Disque, and was unanimously acclaimed by the international specialist press as the benchmark recording of that work. Biber's Sonatae, tam Aris qualim Aulis Servientes was a finalist in the Gramophone Awards and won the year's Diapason d'Or in France. Other recordings include Trio Sonatas by JS Bach, a controversial reading with passion and conviction which was met by unconditional extremes among the international critics, ranging from enthusiasm to horror ("sensational"; "a CD to forget"; "the contagious excitement and unconditional way in which they embrace the music completely captures the listener"); Angel and Devil, a recording juxtaposing Jean-Marie Leclair and Pietro Locatelli; Rariora & Marginalia, a selection of little known "musical fruits" by Muffat, Boeddecker and Bertali, among others. Most recently Venise, which was released by the Ambronay record label, with works by Rosenmueller, Legrenzi and Stradella, and Scottish Songs, with arrangements of scottish folk music by Haydn and Geminiani.

The group's name, an allusion to the florid naturalistic titles of many musical editions of the baroque period, also suggests an aesthetic intention:  to discover the familiar behind an exotic exterior, as in a riddle; or as in art, to illuminate an already familiar and attractive object from an unusual perspective, in search of renewed amazement.
