Jordi Savall

Jordi Savall is an exceptional figure in today’s music world. For more than thirty years he has been devoted to the rediscovery of neglected musical treasures: thirty years researching, reading and playing them with his viola da gamba or conducting their performance. He has restored an essential repertoire for all those with ears to hear it. Except for the "happy few" who already revere it, the viola da gamba is an instrument so refined that it takes us to the very brink of silence. Yet through three ensembles - Hespèrion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations, all founded together with Montserrat Figueras - Jordi Savall has explored and fashioned a universe of emotions and beauty, presenting it to audiences everywhere and to millions of music lovers, and thus bringing recognition to the viola da gamba and to music from here and elsewhere that had fallen into oblivion, all of which has earned him a place as one of the foremost defenders of early music.

One of the most multifariously gifted musicians of his generation, his career as a concert performer, teacher, researcher and creator of new projects, both musical and cultural, make him one of the principal architects of the current revaluation of historical music. With his key contribution to Alain Corneau's film Tous les Matins du Monde (winner of a César best-soundtrack award), his busy concert life (over 140 concerts a year) and recording schedule (6 recordings a year), and with the creation of his own record label Alia Vox, he is demonstrating that early music does not have to be elitist: it can arouse interest in everyone, its audience being ever younger and ever stronger in numbers.

Jordi Savall


Like so many other musicians, Jordi Savall began his music studies at a young age. He began as a singer in the children's choir in Igualada (Catalonia), his home town, and then went on to learn the cello, completing those studies at Barcelona Conservatoire in 1964. He started teaching himself the viola da gamba and early music (Ars Musicae) in 1965, and moved on to start advanced studies in 1968 at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Switzerland), where he was to take over from his teacher August Wenzinger in 1973, and where he still teaches courses and gives master classes.

He has recorded over 170 Cds, and has won many awards, among them: "Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres" (1988), the "Creu de Sant Jordi" (1990), "Musician of the Year" from Le Monde de la Musique (1992) and "Soloist of the Year" in the "Victoires de la Musique" (1993), "La Medalla de Oro de las Bellas Artes" (1998), "Honorary Member of the Konzerthaus" in Vienna (1999), Doctor Honoris Causa at the Université Catholique de Louvain (2000) and at the Universitat de Barcelona (2006), "Victoire de la Musique" for his professional career (2002), the "Medalla d'Or" of the Parliament of Catalonia (2003), and the Honorary Prize of the "Deustchen Schallplattenkritik" (2003). He has also won various "Midem Classical Awards" (1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2005). In the 2006 Awards, his double CD Don Quijote de la Mancha, Romances y Músicas won him a prize in the "early music" category, and it was also selected as "2006 Record of the Year." That double CD was among the five nominees for the 2006 Grammy Awards 2006 in Los Angeles (USA).

His project Lachrimæ Caravaggio blends literature, music and painting in a CD devoted to that great but ill-starred painter. 7 Lachrimae and 7 Stanzas, with music of the time plus music composed by Jordi Savall, form the musical counterpoint as a manner of an "imaginary soundtrack" of the painter's life, while seven of the artist's late works are the subject of commentaries by the writer Dominique Fernandez (who joined the ranks of the "Immortals" by being made a member of the French Academy).

In 2008 Jordi Savall was appointed “Artist for the Peace” into the good will Ambassador’s program of the UNESCO. In 2009 he has been appointed once again Ambassador of the European Year of creativity and innovation by the European Union.

Dimitri Sponis

Dimitri Psonis

Dimitri Psonis (Ahtens) began his musical studies in Athens. He specialized in musical analysis, harmony, counterpoint, byzantine music and musical greek instruments suchs as santur, oud, tzurás, tambura... Then he moved to Madrid where he obtained the top degree of percussion and musical pedagogy in the High Conservatoire of this city. He also studied in the Conservatoire of Amsterdam, and has colaborate with different ensembles.
He founded the groups Krusta, Acroma and P’An-Ku; has accompanied numerous singers and instrumentalists like Elefthería Arvanitaki, Maria del Mar Bonet, Eliseo Parra and Javier Paxariño amongst others. In the last years, he has devoted himself to the study and the interpretation of the classic Ottoman music and to the popular music of Greece and Turkey.
He also has made numerous CD recordings, and collaborated in some soundtrack films and theater works.
In 1997 founded the ensemble Metamorphosis who has being performed in the most important Spanish Festivals.
He collaborates with Early Music ensembles like Limoges Baroque orchestra, Speculum, Mudejar and Hespèrion XXI.
