Latvian National Opera director’s Andrejs Zagars visit to New York  
 


On July 9. 2005. the Latvian National Opera Guild held a reception for LNO director, Andrejs Zagars at the Yale Club, one of the oldest university clubs in New York. The reception was attended by Beatrise Rasums, the guild’s president, as well as members of the guild’s board and other major supporters of the guild.

The attending guests had an opportunity to meet with director Zagars informally enjoying a glass of wine & hors d’ouevres.

A brief introduction by the reception’s organizer, vice president Juris Padegs, followed. Mr. Padegs congratulated Mr. Þagars for a very successful opera summer festival, especially the new productoin of Tchaikovsky’s opera „Queen of Spades”. He noted that since its founding in 1992, the guild’s supporters have donated close to 1 million and briefly discussed the guild’s current projects which include the sponsorship of the latvian composer’s Bruno Skulte opera „Vilkacu mantiniece” (The Heiress of Vilkate) to be presented in cocert form in Riga and Liepaja in november, as well as the installation of a new computer programming system for the opera.

Directors A. Þagars then presented the guests with an interesting overview of the opera’s present and future plans. A high point of the comming season will be the 10th anniversary of the opera house restoration. An anniversary week from september 26th to september 30th has been planned with many musical events including a gala concert conducted by the visiting renown conductor Mariss Jansons. A major future project is the Richard Wagner’s opera trilogy „The Nibelungen Ring”.

The attending guests expressed their appreciation for a very enjoyable and memorable afternoon spent with the director of the beloved Latvian National Opera.
